In a November 2024 interview on Joy Prime, OB Amponsah challenged the habit of Ghanaian comedians measuring themselves only against Nigeria.
"I feel like our focus is too much on Nigeria. I've performed in Rwanda, Zambia, and South Africa… So, Nigerians are not our competition."
He pointed to colleagues taking Ghanaian comedy further afield — Joo and Ebenezer Dwomoh performing in Kenya, and Jacinta at the Apollo — and argued that Ghana has succeeded in making stand-up part of the local culture.
His conclusion: Africa is huge, and there are many opportunities beyond Nigeria.
